SHSM - Specialty High Skills Major SHSM

International Certificate Program  - ICP ICP

Students who demonstrate a commitment to being motivated, engaged and active global citizens.You must enroll in the OCDSB International Certificate Program with your school’s ICP Teacher Advisor. Participants earn the certificate by:

  • Studying an international language
  • Taking internationally-focused classes 
  • Developing an understanding global issues  
  • Participating in internationally-focused projects of their choice

English as a Second Language  - ESL  ESL

ESL programs are intended for students whose first language is not English or is a variety of English significantly different from that used for instruction in Ontario schools and who arrive in Canada with age-appropriate first-language literacy skills and educational backgrounds. Secondary students receive a credit for their ESL language courses but the courses are not linked to any grade since placement is based on English language proficiency.  Students taking ESL language courses at the secondary level may also be able to choose some sheltered content courses to further support their learning, depending on availability.

ELD programs are intended for students whose first language is not English or is a variety of English significantly different from that used for instruction in Ontario schools and who arrive in Canada with significant gaps in their education. They are most often from countries in which their access to education has been limited so that they have had limited opportunities to develop language and literacy skills in any language. Secondary students receive a credit for their ELD language courses but the courses are not linked to any grade since placement is based on English language proficiency and educational background.


Dual Credit Dual Credit

The Dual Credit program is an exciting opportunity to attend Algonquin college while still in high school and earn a credit at both institutions. Accepted students will be completing a real College course that counts towards a certificate, diploma or degree program. Course options include, pre-trades, art & design, business, health sciences, transportation and more.

Those interested should complete the attached consent form and contact their guidance counsellor to apply as soon as possible.

Co-op Co-op

Cooperative Education provides secondary school students the ability to earn credits while working in a community outside of their school. Students will have the opportunity to develop personal and workplace skills important to their career and life planning.
